Powder Ghost Towns: Epic Backcountry Runs in Colorado's Lost Ski Resorts
Updates and Corrections:
Climax Ski Area (Chalk Mountain, Fremont Pass, Trip 29, Page 189)
Important Approach/Access Change: The base of the east face of Chalk Mountain is now being enforced as private property, and ascending to the ski runs directly from Fremont Pass is considered trespassing. For an alternate
approach to Climax, drive Route 91 down the south side of Fremont Pass to Forest Road 134. Park as winter conditions (or winter road maintenance) allow, and skin up FR 134 to the summit of Chalk Mountain. This approach will bring you up the back (west) side of the mountain. From the summit, you can
ski the runs on the east slopes. Private property extends about halfway up the mountain (if you're carrying an altimeter, the National Forest-private land boundary is roughly at the 11,600' elevation. Stay above this boundary while skiing. Plan your day so that after you last lap on the east slopes,
you skin back up the summit of the mountain and enjoy a long descent back to your vehicle down FR 134. This alternate approach, while longer (about 2.5 miles one way) and less convenient, avoids the difficulty of the private property at Fremont Pass.
