6/30/08: Upcoming Race
On Sunday, July 6, Pete will compete in the Cheyenne Sprint Triathlon in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The race includes a 600m swim, 22km bike, and 5km run. Check back after the race for results!

5/29/08: Race Results:
Pete finished the Bolder Boulder in a time of 0:46:55 (a 7:34 per mile pace). That was good enough for a top 6% finish (2,783 overall out of 54,000+ runners). Pete placed 59th out of 479 in the M29 division, and 2,339th out of 22,100 men.
5/27/08: Updated Book Tour
In early and mid June, Pete will be doing a book tour to select locations in New York and Vermont to promote his new book, At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks. The following dates and locations are confirmed.

5/22/08: Award Winner!
Pete is a Merit Prize winner in the 2008 Turf and Ornamental Communicators Assocation annual Writing Award Competition. His award-winning article, "Playing the Numbers Game," appeared as a feature in the February 2007 issue of Golf Course Management. "Playing the Numbers Game" earned recognition in the "Writing for Commercial Publications: Environmental Stewardship Article" category. Pete won the same award in the same category in the 2006 competition.
5/21/08: Upcoming Race
On Monday, May 26, Pete will run in the 30th annual Bolder Boulder 10K. With more than 50,000 runners, the Bolder Boulder draws an international field of competitors and is one of the largest 10K road races in the United States. Check back here after the race for results!
5/5/08: Mountain Photo Galleries Added
The Mountains page of the Adventure section has been updated, and four new photo galleries have been added. Check out three slide shows from Pete's trip to the Chic Choc Mountains in Quebec: Mont Coleman, Point 750, and Frere du Nicol-Albert. 5/1/08: Upcoming Book Signing and Slide Show
On Thursday, May 8, Pete will be at Neptune Mountaineering in Boulder for a book signing and slide show about At the Mercy of the Mountains. The event starts at 8:00pm. More details are available on the Neptune Mountaineering website.

3/19/08: Race results
Pete finished the COSMIC Loveland race in a time of 2:52. The roughly 7 mile course gained 4,500 vertical feet. Pete's time put him in 16th place in the Men's AT Race division, which was good enough to earn points toward the season-long COSMIC series standings.
3/7/08: Upcoming Race
This Saturday, March 8, 2008, Pete will compete in COSMIC Loveland, another stop on the ski mountaineering race circuit. Pete hopes to improve upon his performance at the COSMIC Snowmass race. Check back after the race for a full update on results!
3/7/08: Award Winner!
Pete is a recently-announced winner in the Solas Awards, an annual writing competition sponsored by the publisher Traveler's Tales, and honoring the best in travel writing. Pete won a Silver Award in the Men's Travel category: the best account by a man of a testosterone-fueled encounter or experience on the road. He earned the award for Eight Seconds, an essay about his experience learning to ride a bull in the rodeo. The essay greatly expanded upon an earlier article that was published in Men's Edge magazine. You can read the award-winning essay here. You can also expect to see the essay published in a future edition of Traveler's Tales' popular anthologies.

3/7/08: At the Mercy of the Mountains is Available
Pete's book, At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks, is now out and available from The Lyons Press! 2/4/08: Race results
Other than cold temperatures at the start (4 degrees Fahrenheit) and a fierce wind atop Snowmass, conditions were great for COSMIC Snowmass, with good snow and clear skies. Even so, roughly one out of six racers didn't finish the grueling course. Pete finished in 3 hours and 46 minutes, a vast improvement over his performance at the 2007 COSMIC Sunlight race. Winner Ethan Passant finished in 2 hours and 2 minutes.
1/16/08: Upcoming Race
Saturday, January 19, Pete will compete in the Snowmass Winter Wild, the first stop on the Colorado Ski Mountaineering Cup race tour. The 11-mile course - the longest of the COSMIC series - will include more than 5,000 vertical feet of ascent. Pete will be racing with Scarpa F1 boots on Dynafit SR 11.0 skis mounted with Speed Lite bindings. Check back after the race for an update on results!

This past weekend, Pete and his dog, Altai, competed in the Canicross division of Colorado Mountain Musher's Buena Vista Dryland Race. They finished 3rd in a field of 13 competitors. Check out a photo gallery from the race here.

Check out a new gallery from an ascent of Battle Mountain in Rocky Mountain National Park. Pete and Kelli's original plan was to climb the North Face of Longs Peak, but steady gale-force winds at Granite Pass (12,000 feet) - and a plume of snow howling off the North Face and out over the Diamond - prompted them to reconsider and set their sights on nearby, modest Battle Mountain. 9/17/07: Race Updates
Pete and Tom, competing as Team East Meets West, finished 8th out of 19 teams in their division at Gravity Play's Adventure XStream Vail 12-hour adventure race. Check out the photo gallery. Pete and Washington DC-based Team Hurtbox Racing AC finished 45th out of 351 total teams at this year's Reach the Beach Relay in New Hampshire. Check out the photo gallery.

8/22/07: Upcoming Adventure Races
During the first half of September, Pete will compete in two adventure races. On September 8, Pete and his friend, Tom, will compete in the Vail race of Gravity Play's Adventure Xstream race series. Pete and Tom will race as Team East Meets West in the 60-mile, 12-hour, 2-person division. They finished fourth in the same division at last year's Durango race. One week later, September 14-15, Pete will run as part of Hurtbox Racing AC's 12-man relay team in New Hampshire's Reach the Beach. The trail- and road-running relay covers 200 miles in 24 hours, starting at Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch and ending at the Atlantic Ocean. 8/13/07: New Book Deal!
Pete has signed with Wilderness Press (www.wildernesspress.com) to publish his third book. Powder Ghost Towns: The Backcountry Skier's Guide to Colorado's Lost Ski Areas is expected to hit shelves Oct 2008. At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks is expected to hit shelves Spring 2008. Hunting Wind: A Storm Chaser's Quest To Track Down Mother Nature's Biggest, Baddest Weather (coauthored with Roger Hill) will come out Fall 08 or Spring 09. 3/13/07: Upcoming Expedition
At the end of May, Pete and his wife, Kelli, head to Bolivia's Cordillera Real for a 2.5 week high altitude mountaineering expedition. They'll attempt Pequeno Alpamayo (17,618'), Huayna Potosi (19,974') and Illimani (21,125'). Check back in late June to see photo galleries from the trip!

7/15/06: At the Mercy of the Mountains Delayed
The publishing of Pete's first book, At the Mercy of the Mountains: True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks, has been postponed. Pete and his publisher, AMC Books, have terminated their agreement by mutual consent, and the publishing of the book will be delayed while Pete seeks another publisher for his project.
5/22/06: Award Winner!
Pete is a Merit Prize winner in the 2006 Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association Writing Award Competition. His award-winning article, "Waste to Water," appeared in the January 2005 issue of Golf Course Management, and chronicled a Texas golf course's dramatic environmental restoration of a five-acre waste bunker that was converted to a thriving wetland habitat. "Waste to Water" earned recognition in the "Writing for Commercial Publications: Environmental Stewardship Article" category. Congratulations to Golf Course Management, which took home four awards at this year's competition!
12/12/05: Award Winner!
Pete is a First Prize winner in the 2005 North American Travel Journalists Association Awards Competition. His award-winning article, “Paddler Profile: Eric Stiller – In the Big Apple,” appeared in the February 2005 issue of Sea Kayaker Magazine and earned top honors in the Personality Profile category. The competition is judged by the School of Art & Media Studies and the School of English, Philosophy & Humanities at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Read the article.
